bottom line for me, is that there is no such thing as a bad publicity. If an artist receives good reaction, great. If they get horrible reaction, fantastic. Only time when an artist comes to near death is when the audience becomes indifferent towards their work.

You've made a very good point here.
I find it very interesting how an artist can make a living from making works that people love or by simply making people angry.
It seems to be a black and white area. Perhaps artists who wish to gain fame should choose one extreme or the other?
